In the folder Reports is the document Annual Report, a rough draft of changes in sales and profits for an imaginary company, Glade Inc. You will learn to move and copy text in the Annual Report document.

Do this to pull Annual Report:

  1. Open the Reports folder.
    (Select the icon, choose Open.)
  2. Open the Annual Report document. (Stuck? Press Continue, then press the Practice button when it appears.)

The Annual Report document needs to be modified: You’ll get to move and copy text. As usual, SELECTING is the first step.

Here are quick ways to select one or more words:

  1. Activate the Annual Report window. (Click in the window so it “comes to the top.”)
  2. In the Annual Report window, place the text pointer over the word DRAFT then double-click: click twice quickly but lightly. (Word not selected? Hold the pointer still over the word and double-click again.)
  3. Select all the words in Annual Report’s last line: Double-click on Glade. Keep the button down and move through the last word.

One way to move text on paper is to use scissors and glue to cut and paste. Lisa allows you to move text in its documents in a similar way, by cutting and pasting.

Do this to move a line of text in Annual Report:

  1. Activate the Annual Report window.
  2. In the Annual Report window, select the line “For annual stockholders meeting.”
  3. Choose Cut from the Edit menu. (If you want to see the text you cut, open Clipboard.)
  4. Tell Lisa where to put the cut text: Select an insertion point in the blank line above the line that starts [says] “Glade Inc.”
  5. Choose Paste from the Edit menu.

To COPY some text and put it elsewhere, you Copy and Paste instead of Cut and Paste.

Do this to make a copy of Annual Report’s last line and paste it over “PARTIAL DRAFT” in the window:

  1. Click to activate the Annual Report window.
  2. Select the last line in Annual Report, which starts “Glade Inc.”
  3. Choose Copy from the Edit menu.
  4. Select the line “PARTIAL DRAFT” in Annual Report.
  5. Choose Paste from the Edit menu.

A gray icon “shadow” marks a window’s filing home in a folder or diskette. If you open an icon that’s on the desktop, a white icon shadow marks its desktop spot.

Do this to get the desktop ready for the next topic:

  1. Put away the Annual Report document. Watch the window close and return to its gray shadow in its filing home, the folder Reports.

(Hint: When in doubt about what to do, click in the named object, then open the File/Print menu to see if any of its items do what you want.)
