Overview: Summaries

This topic contains the summaries you’ve seen throughout LisaGuide. There are no tasks, you just get to read summaries.

To stop LisaGuide now, choose Stopping LisaGuide from the Topics menu.

To go to another topic, now or while reading the summaries, choose from the Topics menu.

Of Mice & Menus Summary

The mouse moves a pointer on Lisa’s DESKTOP, the dark gray part of the screen. Using the mouse, you press “buttons” on Lisa’s screen and choose instructions to Lisa from MENUS. Menu names are shown in the white menu bar at the top of the screen.

Press a button, such as the Continue button:
Place the tip of the arrow-shaped pointer in the button.
Hold the mouse still.
Click: Press the mouse button then release it.
Choose from a menu:
Place the pointer’s tip over the menu name.
Press and hold on the mouse button while you move the pointer to the menu item you want to
choose. Release the mouse button when the item highlights (turns dark).

Can’t do the numbered tasks in a LisaGuide exercise? Press Continue to make the Practice and Demo buttons appear. Then press Practice to see the exercise restated, or press Demo to see a demonstration of how to do the exercise; usually you won’t need a demonstration.

Starting a Document Summary

Documents and folders are stored on DISKS. On Lisa’s desktop, closed documents, folders, disks, etc are shown as ICONS, tiny pictures. The contents of open objects are shown in rectangular WINDOWS.

Tell Lisa what icon or window to work with, click in it:
A selected icon “highlights” – turns dark.
The active window’s title is highlighted, and gray bars appear at its right and bottom edges.
Open an icon:
Select the icon.
Choose Open from the File/Print menu.
Create a document:
Select a stationery pad icon.
Choose Tear Off Stationery from the File/Print menu.
Rename an icon:
Select the icon.
Type the new name.

Editing a Document Summary

When working with text, you select the text to work with, then tell Lisa what to do.

Select (highlight) text:
Press and hold as you move the pointer through the text you want to select.
Insert text:
Click to select an insertion point.
Type
Replace text:
Select (highlight) text.
Type.
Cut text:
Select text.
Choose Cut from the Edit menu.

To undo an action: Choose Undo Last Change from the Edit menu. To correct a mistake while typing, press the Backspace key.

Filing a Document Summary

Each document and folder has a filing home, where it’s filed.

Change a filing home:
Move an icon to another folder or disk.
Replace an icon in its filing home, save changes:
Select the icon.
Choose Save & Put Away from the File/Print menu.
Close a window, replace in its filing home, save changes:
Activate the window.
Choose Save & Put Away.
Close a window, place on the desktop:
Activate the window.
Choose Set Aside from the File/Print menu.
Create a folder:
Select the Empty Folders stationery pad.
Choose Tear Off Stationery from the File/Print menu.

Viewing a Document Summary

View a document in a window:
Activate the window so that gray scroll bars appear.
Click or press the arrows to scroll line-by-line.
Click or press the page-like view buttons to scroll by windowfuls.
Move the plain box-like elevators to see any part of a document.
Resize a window:
Activate the window.
Press and hold in its size control box at the window’s lower right corner, where its scroll bars intersect.
Move a window: Press and hold in its title bar.

More Editing Summary

Quickly select a word:
Double-click in it.
Quickly select a group of words:
Double-click in the first word and hold down the mouse button as you move the pointer throught [through] the rest of the words.
Move text:
Select the text to be moved, choose Cut from the Edit menu.
Select the new location, choose Paste from the Edit menu.
Copy text:
Select the text to be copied, choose Copy from the Edit menu.
Select the new location, choose Paste from the Edit menu.

More Filing Summary

Duplicate a closed document or folder and its contents:
Select the icon.
Choose Duplicate from the File/Print menu.
Move the blinking copy to complete the duplication.
Create a stationery pad.
Select a document icon.
Choose Make Stationery Pad from the File/Print menu.
Discard a closed folder or document.
Move the icon to the Wastebasket.
Retrieve an item from the Wastebasket.
Open the Wastebasket.
Move the icon out of the Wastebasket.

Stopping LisaGuide summary

That completes the last LisaGuide topic. You can begin working with a specific kind of document: See the Getting Started section in one of these manuals:
LisaGraph, to make graphs.
LisaDraw, to draw pictures.
LisaCalc, to calculate finances.
LisaWrite, to write reports, etc.
LisaList, to work with lists.
LisaProject, to schedule projects.

You can stop LisaGuide now and later review Lisaguide, if you wish. Section A of the Owner’s Guide tells how to restart LisaGuide.

Choose what you want to do:
To stop using LisaGuide: Hold down the Apple key to the left of the space bar while you press the period key.
To continue using LisaGuide: Choose from the Topics menu.
